Rattles are not an unusual object among pueblo peoples, but a rattle fashioned from clay is. Rattles are used in pueblo ceremonies and dances meant to produce rain. The motion of the hand, which holds a rattle, simulates falling rain, and the sound of the pebbles inside the rattle mock the thunder. In this way, a plea for rain is sent to the heavens.

This rattle is constructed of traditional native clay, slipped with a rag-wiped bentonite clay and decorated in red and black design elements. The condition is excellent.
