Pino started making pottery when she was around 10 years old and was pleased to be getting $4 for each one she made and sold at a Santo Domingo Feast Day.* She has garnered prizes throughout her career—at least a dozen 1st prizes from the Intertribal Ceremonial in Gallup, over ten 1st prizes from Santa Fe Indian Market and ten 1st prizes at the New Mexico State Fair.

A potter from each of the nineteen New Mexico Pueblos was chosen to visit the White House in 1974 and make a presentation of their pottery to First Lady Pat Nixon. Vicentita Pino was the one chosen from Zia. The nineteen pottery items from the pueblos were eventually presented by the First Lady to the Smithsonian where they will reside forever.

Pino produced pottery of very traditional style from Zia. Her vessel shapes and painted designs followed traditional styles throughout her career. This serving bowl is no exception. It is traditional in shape, even to the extra coil of clay at the rim which highlights the small incurving just below that extra coil. It is such extra efforts that define an outstanding potter.

The design on the exterior is that seen on most Zia bowls—from small stew bowls to large dough bowls. The circle seen in the corner of the design panels is the eye of a bird. The interior of the bowl is stone-polished red slip as is the underside of the exterior of the bowl. The potter placed her initials V.S.P. very prominently just below the design panel.

The bowl is in excellent condition and truly a beautiful example of traditional Zia Pueblo pottery. There is excellent biographical information on the potter in the Harlow and Lanmon book referenced below.

*Santo Domingo Pueblo (Kewa Pueblo) feast day falls on August 4th in memory of the patron saint, Saint Dominic. The celebration is the largest of the Pueblo feast days and welcomes potters and artists from the other 18 Pueblos to partake. Kewa Pueblo is one of the few Pueblos to extend such an invitation to the other Pueblos as an opportunity to sell their work.
