Nellie Bica was one of the most well known Zuni potters of the early 20th century. She learned the craft from her aunt as early as 1917, and the first pieces she made were owl figurines. Although she made vessels later in her life, she is most remembered for the owl figurines she continued to make throughout her career.
This adult owl has two baby owls perched on her wings—a favorite style of the artist.
Condition: Structurally, the figurine is in fine condition. There are a number of spots on the backside where spalling has occurred. It is interesting that the spalling is confined mostly to the back of the figurine.
