This is an extraordinarily beautiful terrace rim bowl. The flexure at the rim would indicate a date of no later than 1880. It is possibly earlier. The simplicity of design is another indication of an earlier date.

This bowl appears to have been used as a“paint” bowl, the purpose of which is to mix body paint for use in ceremonial activities. The bowl was broken into three pieces—the breaks are easily visible. One of the step triangles was broken off. It has been replaced with plaster—probably by Winship.

It is quite possible that the bowl was given to Winship because it was no longer functional because of the damage.

Each of the stepped triangles is decorated on the inside and outside with a Zuni bird design. No other decoration appears on the bowl except a framing line outlining the entire rim area.

Provenance: The property of Philip Winship Davis, from the collection of his grandfather, George Parker Winship.
