Pueblo pottery is considered a traditional art form, with materials, techniques, and stylistic approaches passed down through generations. Still, the art has not remained static. Over time, individual potters introduced their own creative expressions, while Indian traders sometimes shaped production by requesting styles they believed would appeal to buyers. Additionally, imported commercial wares influenced Pueblo potters, who occasionally adapted those styles for their own use.

This outstanding Acoma Polychrome jar reflects that external influence. Created around the turn of the 20th century, it represents a rare and exotic form likely intended for a Western market and inspired by commercially manufactured glazed pottery.

Following the arrival of the railroad in 1880 and the growth of tourism in the Southwest, Pueblo artisans began producing pottery for both traditional use and outside audiences. While much of the pottery made for trade during that era was modest in quality, this jar stands apart. It is exceptional in every respect — from its graceful, subtly swelling form and perfectly balanced proportions to the precise placement of the applied lugs at the shoulder. The visual complexity and fine execution of the painted design demonstrate a masterful hand. A beautiful network of fine crazing and a rich patina over the rag-wiped white slip further enhance its historic character.

Condition: very good condition. Examination by UV does not indicate any repairs or restoration of any kind.

Provenance: This Acoma Jar with Handles, Birds, Flowers, and Geometric Designs was sold in 2015 to a collector in Santa Fe and is once again available through Adobe Gallery.
