Juana Concho Pasqual (1892-1969) signature. This pottery smoking pipe is signed with the name J. Pasqual, which we have determined is Juana Concho Pasqual (1892-c.1990).  We have only had one other item by her in the entire history of the gallery, so it is assumed that her pottery is relatively rare or, perhaps, she was not prolific.

The pipe is slipped in white clay and the stem has a streak of orange slip over slightly indented chevron stripes.  The bowl is decorated in traditional Acoma designs with black guaco paint.

According to an inventory compiled by Rick Dillingham, there is no pottery by this potter in the collection of the School for Advanced Research nor is there an Acoma smoking pipe in its collection.  This is another indication that pottery by Pasqual is relatively rare.

The 1910 census report of Acoma Pueblo lists a Juana Pasqual who, at that time was listed as age 45, living in the village of Acomita.  She would appear to not be the potter who made this pipe. A list compiled by Rick Dillingham in 1986 to 1991, lists a potter named Juana Pasqual, so it is apparent there was an early Juana Pasqual and a later Juana Pasqual.  We assume this pipe was made by the later potter.
