Many potters today make pottery of a relatively small scale perhaps because it is easier and faster to do so or perhaps because that is what the demand is for. Phyllis Juanico, however, has made one of the largest contemporary Acoma jars we have had in the gallery. A 14-inch diameter jar is not insignificant. Since this is the first pottery item we have had from this potter, we do not know if she consistently made large jars or if this is an unusual one. At any rate, it is truly magnificent in both scale and design.

The jar is globular in shape and decorated with parrots clinging to stems of plants while protected under rainbows. Each design element was executed with patience and detail.

Condition: The jar is in original excellent condition. It probably dates to the 1990s decade.

Provenance: ex. coll. Frances Sonnenberg, Santa Fe resident.
