This Crow (Angwusi) Katsina doll by Gilbert Naseyowma (b. 1934) represents one of the warrior katsinam who play a vital disciplinary role in Hopi ceremonial life. The Crow Katsina is known for confronting the clowns during Plaza Dances or appearing in the Soyohim of late spring, issuing repeated warnings before ultimately delivering a forceful reprimand for their excessive and unruly behavior. In this carving, the katsina holds his whip with the butts facing forward — a gesture signaling an initial warning rather than direct punishment.
Naseyowma's rendering captures both the authority and ceremonial presence of the figure, reflecting the artist's deep understanding of Katsina traditions. A remarkable example of Katsina carving, this piece carries added significance through its maker's heritage: Gilbert Naseyowma hails from a distinguished family of Hopi carvers, and his work exemplifies the refinement and cultural integrity associated with that tradition.
