Diné of Navajo Nation artist Percy Spencer showcases his elegant and outstanding silver appliqué technique with this bolo tie. A sterling silver base has been heavily stamped around the edges giving it a ribbed effect. Just inside of this a twisted ring of silver was added. Two pieces of blood red coral and three of sky-blue turquoise rest in serrated bezels surrounded with beautiful silver appliqué leaves, balls, and swirls like spring fiddleheads.
A bear claw sits in a large, serrated clamp nestled next to a sweeping silver appliqué leaf. Bears are believed to have supernatural powers to the Diné people, which includes great healing powers. They are also said to represent strength and to be spiritual guides for those who require them. The claw of a bear holds great value in its meaning, and this bolo tie could have been made with the intention of transferring these elements to its wearer in times of need.
This bolo tie is complex and rare. It is signed, “Percy Spencer” but we were unable to find much information on the artist. Artworks signed by this artist tend to be layered, complex silver appliqué bolo ties, rings, bracelets, and amulets that often feature turquoise, blood coral and bear claws. He does sparingly include gemstones such as lapis lazuli, labradorite, and jasper. He is listed as living in Mentmore, New Mexico, but there is no other published information.
Condition: This bear claw bolo is in excellent, almost original condition.
Provenance: This Blood Coral and Turquoise Bolo Tie with Bear Claw and Silver Appliqué is from an estate in eastern Washington.
