This historic polychrome OLLA was created by an unknown Zia Pueblo artist. We’d date the water jar to between 1910 and 1930, and we’d add without hesitation that it is an outstanding example of the work produced during this period. When we hear the words “Zia OLLA,” we imagine the form and design seen here. An appealing patina, developed over many years of handling, contributes to the alluring nature of the piece.

The OLLA’s shape is beautiful. It is well-balanced with an even shoulder and a nicely rounded midbody. The typical minor variations appear in the form of a slight lean that is barely discernible from certain angles and a rim that dips down just a hair on one side. These variations, of course, are to be expected; we point them out as positive attributes that enhance the look and feel of the piece.

Like the shape of the pot it adorns, the design is classic Zia Pueblo. A rainbow in a strong red tone travels around the jar’s exterior, winding from the bottom to just an inch below the top of the single design band. Four birds appear in a soft yellow tone, alternating between a perch atop the rainbow’s lower sections and a comfortable spot beneath its tall arches. These red and yellow tones combine beautifully with the black pigment and cream slip, resulting in a gorgeous four-color polychrome piece.

Condition: excellent condition with light abrasion from handling, blacklight examination reveals no restoration or repair

Provenance: this Four-Color Polychrome Zia Pueblo Historic Pottery OLLA is from a private collection
