Long before the Spaniards arrived in the Southwest, bringing sheep with them, the Pueblo Indians were weaving cotton clothing for their everyday use and for ceremonial costumes.  This amazing and most unusual hand-woven cotton rain sash has not been identified as to the weaver, however, such a combination of two different weaving techniques carried out simultaneously is an astonishing feat.  The red, black, and green strip was woven into the white rain sash, not added after the white was finished.  It was not woven over the white either.  The white yarn stops at the multi-colored strip and resumes on the opposite side.  Not knowledgeable in weaving techniques, I do not know how to explain the concept, so will refrain from doing so.

The white is homespun cotton, but the multi-colored strip may be commercial yarn.  It is difficult to identify the pueblo of origin, but I do not believe it to be from Hopi Pueblo, only because I have not seen one of this style from Hopi before.  I am sure someone of you will let me know who, what, when and why when you see this on our website.  I think perhaps it is from a New Mexico pueblo, perhaps Jemez Pueblo, as there was a weaver of white rain sashes from Jemez in the 1970s. A non-native person might see these during ceremonial dances and this textile would be worn around the waist with the designs and fringe hanging down to one side.

Condition: very good condition

Provenance: this Hand Woven Wide Pueblo Rain Sash is from the estate of Tom Dickerson, a former Santa Fe resident and artist who passed away last year
