This historic pottery bowl was made by an unknown Isleta Pueblo potter. We estimate that it dates to the early 1900s. It shows evidence of extensive use, most noticeably in the generous coating of white material that has accumulated across the interior. Light scratches, nicks and abrasions appear on the exterior, enhancing the patina's appeal.
This style of pottery is traditional to Isleta pueblo. Tan clay is used for the vessel; a red slip is applied encircling the rim and then stone polished. Sand serves as a tempering agent. Traditionally, a red band appears around the rim, and fire clouds adorn the exterior. This simple, utilitarian style highlights beautiful vessel forms, appealing fire cloud patterns, and richly patinated surfaces.
These utilitarian pieces were traditionally made for use at the pueblo and were rarely sold to tourists who preferred the decorated wares that were not traditional to Isleta but were brought in with a group of potters from Laguna Pueblo who migrated to and settled at Isleta in 1879 following a factionalism at Laguna. The Laguna women continued making Polychrome pottery of the Laguna style and taught the Isleta women the techniques. This new style became traditional in Isleta, replacing the original pottery style.
This particular piece offers much to those who appreciate the elegant beauty of historic Isleta pottery. Its form is balanced and attractive, and its rich red color is gorgeous. A few light fire clouds appear within the interior, but otherwise, it is consistent in coloration. Wonderful variations appear on the exterior, with certain areas displaying a tan tone, others matching the red interior, and thick black fire clouds hovering around the center.
Condition: excellent condition for its age and utilitarian use. It appears to have remnants of white flour on the interior.
Provenance: this Historic Redware Bowl from Isleta Pueblo is from a private New Mexico collection
