This extraordinary small historic Zuni jar stands out for both its refined execution and distinctive proportions. Painted in polychrome, using black and red pigments on a white slip, the jar features classic Zuni imagery, including heartline deer, birds, and familiar geometric motifs. The rim is further enhanced with a repeating triangular motif, carefully rendered and interrupted by a ceremonial spirit line break.
What makes this piece especially remarkable is the triangular or diamond-shaped motifs on the body that are often found on the pottery of Tsayutitsa, a prominent Zuni potter active in the early 20th century. This detail suggests a likely date of origin around the 1920s or possibly earlier.
The jar's form is equally compelling. A tall neck rises into a small curled rim, which is painted black along with the top inch of the interior. The shoulder sits slightly raised, creating a gentle terrace before giving way to a rounded, bulbous body that tapers into a narrow base. The overall effect is a vessel that feels both grounded and elegant in its proportions.
Despite its small scale, the jar is rich with presence and artistry and serves as an exceptional example of historic Zuni pottery that rewards close study.
Condition: excellent condition for a jar of its age with a minor rim chip that has been professionally repaired
