Once Known Native American Carver

One of the favored carvings of many Hopi is that of Nataska, the feared Ogre of the Hopi. During the process of collecting food from Hopi homes for distribution to the Katsinas in the kivas, the Nataska make horrible noises to scare the children. From the earliest ages, Hopi children have heard stories about how the Nataska would abduct children and eat them, so it is no wonder that they are terrified of them. The parent or parents bargain with the Nataska to leave the children alone and the Nataska agree, thus the parent is the hero and the children are saved.

This is an exceptional carving of this katsina.  The white deerskin cape worn over the shoulders was actually carved from wood, as was the sword.  The carving is completely of wood except for the feathers on the head.

Condition: The carving is in excellent condition.

Provenance: To be provided to purchaser
