Tobacco has been a traditional crop for Native American tribes for as long as one can recall.  They did not smoke tobacco as a daily event, but smoking was reserved for ceremonial occasions and for occasions when one came to visit.  It was customary to light up a pipe and smoke before conversations began.  Today, among the pueblo people, smoking is more of a daily event than one of ceremonial celebration.

This pottery pipe appears to have been made to be sold as it shows no evidence of having been used.  The design of a three-leaf plant appears on one side and traditional Hopi rain clouds on the opposite side.
