Marie Gachupin Romero, Jemez Pueblo Potter

Marie Gachupin Romero and Adobe Gallery share a long history of working together. Marie participated in our storyteller exhibits and nacimiento exhibits as far back as the early 1980s. She was such a pleasant person that it was always a joy to work with her.

This Nacimiento set was made by Marie in the late 1990s and is typical of the style she produced throughout her career. The pigments are all natural with some left in a matte state and some in a stone-polished state.  She made her first set in 1975 and it sold immediately.  The following August she made some for Indian Market and the opening of the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque, and then orders came flowing in for more.  One of her sets was pictured in New Mexico Magazine.

Marie G. Romero (1927-2007) signatureMarie Gachupin Romero was born July 27, 1927, the daughter of Joe and Persingula Gachupin. She made pottery of the finest quality for over 50 years. The faces of her figurines are beautifully sculpted and always portray an angelic presence. She most often combined matte-paint and stone-polished slip in the same piece as in this nacimiento. Her specialty was figurative pottery, primarily storytellers and nacimientos.

Her daughters, Maxine Toya and Laura Gachupin, have continued in her tradition as have some of her grandchildren—a beautiful legacy for an exceptional woman.

Condition: The set is in excellent original condition

Provenance:  This nacimiento was made around 1995 and purchased by a resident of Albuquerque from whose estate we just acquired it.
