Kewa Pueblo Polychrome Olla with Square and Oval Patterns

The design on this olla has been associated with the famous Kewa Pueblo potter Monica Silva.  We previously had a dough bowl with the same chain-like design that was made by her.  The square or diamond elements have the appearance of textiles and they are connected with oval elements with dots in their centers.  Robert Tenorio told me that the dots were applied by fingertips.

The design on this jar was a brave departure for a potter in the early part of the 20th century.  Monica Silva, having been born and raised at Santa Clara, moved to Kewa Pueblo when she was around 20 years old.  Perhaps she did not feel the need to adhere to strict Kewa designs being used by other native potters.  She was innovative and creative throughout her career.

Condition:  UV examination of the jar does not reveal any repair, restoration or over-paint.  It appears to be in excellent condition.

Provenance: From an Albuquerque collector
