Once Known Native American Carver

This Hopi Wakas (Cow) Katsina Doll is probably from the 1940s decade. He is constructed from cottonwood root and painted with casein and vegetal paints. He has a rattle in his right hand and a stick in his left. The traditional Hopi wide woven and embroidered sash hangs down his right side.  This Katsina seems to have first appeared in the Hopi pantheon of Katsinas around 1900 and has appeared regularly since then.

Condition:  The carving was missing its left ear but it has been replaced, otherwise it is in excellent condition.

Provenance: To be provided to purchaser
