Artist signature of Milland Lomakema (1941-2021) Dawakema - Hopi Pueblo, Hopituh Shi-nu-muThis 1979 work by Milland Lomakema demonstrates a significant evolution from his 1967 style, showcasing the more complex, abstract, and experimental approach he developed as a member of the Artist Hopid.

This piece is a masterful example of Lomakema's use of stipple and spray techniques paired with sharp, graphic ink lines.

The composition features highly stylized birds, likely representing eagles or hawks. In Hopi culture, birds are often messengers between the physical and spiritual worlds, carrying prayers to the heavens. The stepped patterns seen on the bodies of the figures are rain clouds or "kiva" step motifs. These symbolize the life-giving nature of water and the architecture of sacred spaces.

Notice the diagonal, shaded planes in the background. This technique was a hallmark of the Artist Hopid, creating a sense of depth and movement that suggests the vast, layered mesas of the Hopi landscape.

Unlike Lomakema's 1967 works, which used a fuller color palette, this piece relies on a sophisticated range of sepia and brown tones. This focuses the viewer's attention on the line work and texture, reminiscent of ancient petroglyphs or pottery designs. This 1979 piece is compositionally more complex. It leans into a circular, rhythmic flow, suggesting a spiritual cycle rather than a single moment in time. The technical execution is much more refined, showing his mastery of negative space and atmospheric shading.

Lomakema's works from the late 1970s are highly sought by collectors because they represent the peak of the Artist Hopid's influence on the broader Native American Fine Arts movement. This era proved that indigenous artists could be "modern" while remaining deeply rooted in their traditional worldview.
