Summer storms over the mesas of New Mexico are among nature’s most spectacular moments, akin to storms over the Grand Canyon. Moments like these have always been irresistible to artists of New Mexico.

John Marin, Victor Higgins, Raymond Jonson, James Morris and others have painted storms of this type. Now, Navajo artist Tony Abeyta has done so and in a most spectacular manner. The rolling hills are awash in color—reds, yellows, greens and blues—and are being nurtured with strong waves of rain. A group of chamisa commands the front of the image and clouds and rain dominate the sky. There is a cubist or modernist approach to the painting. As usual, Abeyta has produced a powerful image of nature at work.

Tony Abeyta is a very versatile artist. He is unquestionably one of the most talented and celebrated young artists of today. He has continued to expand his area of interest in painting and constantly has enlarged his field of expertise. He is one of today’s most collectible young Native artists.
