This drum, made by a Cochiti Pueblo artist, appears in a natural, unpainted state. The artist's minimalistic approach highlights the inherent beauty of the wood and rawhide. While we appreciate the inventive and colorful designs that appear on certain drums, this piece offers a strong argument in favor of leaving the wood untouched.

We would estimate that the drum dates to the mid-twentieth century. It exhibits extensive wear from use, and there is a rich patina, both visible and tangible. A gentle tap of the rawhide drum head produces a pleasant, round tone, confirming that the artist devoted attention to both visual impression and sonic integrity.
