This is a Navajo sampler textile made to illustrate the technique of weaving a Navajo rug. The cotton thread warp is exposed at the top, and the wooden weaving tools are inserted into the warp in the way the textile would be woven.
Sampler rugs like this one became popular in the mid-twentieth century as a tourist item. They are rarely made today.
