These oval clip earrings were made with Chinese Writing Stone. Brief research on Wikipedia shows that "The Chinese Writing Stone, also known as Chinese Writing Rock, is a rare Basalt porphyry (a combination of granular sediment dispersed in a matrix) mineral with elongated feldspar crystal inclusions." These unique stones resemble white Mandarin characters embedded in shiny black stone.
Laverne Goldtooth was a talented and creative Navajo jewelry designer who loved working with unusual materials. Educated at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe where she studied under Duane Maktima and Preston Duwyenie she was an innovative artist who used traditional silverworking methods to create distinctive modern jewelry art. She enjoyed working with high grade turquoise as well as stones not usually found in Native American jewelry.
The clip earrings are very comfortable and when worn hang very nicely. The earrings are signed with Laverne's hallmark, a capital letter L.
Laverne Goldtooth used her signature style of adding whimsical dangles to an oval cabochon of Chinese Writing Stone to create these wonderful clip earrings. A snug handmade bezel surrounds a unique piece of the curious black and white stone. She placed three silver drops above the stone.
Condition: the earrings are in excellent condition
Provenance: this Oval Clip Earrings with Chinese Writing Stone from a former New Mexico resident who now lives out of state.
