Turquoise announces its age in a graceful manner of turning darker after years of being handled, absorbing natural oil from one's hands. Such handling does no harm to the turquoise, only improves it. Some turquoise absorbs this natural oil more readily than others, resulting in various shades of individual cabochons over time. It is this subtle change in color that enhances the beauty of turquoise.

The turquoise in this Diné of the Navajo Nation ring is an excellent example of this process. Some of the cabs are darker than others, resulting in varying shades of color, thereby adding patina, age, charm, or whatever description you wish. It announces its vintage age. The ring appears to date to the mid- to late-twentieth century.
