Three strands of highly polished and smoothly shaped coral beads were strung with elegantly shaped turquoise nuggets, most of which were drilled off center, to create this gorgeous necklace. Three strands of highly polished and smoothly shaped coral beads were strung with elegantly shaped turquoise nuggets, most of which were drilled off center, to create this gorgeous Navajo necklace.  The turquoise nuggets were set at the same level on each strand of the necklace, then turquoise hieshe was interspersed between the nuggets, all at random patterns of blue between the deep orange coral. The turquoise and coral both display a beautiful sheen from age.

High quality coral has become quite rare over the last century. Coral is not a stone, it is the calcium remnants of sea creatures who live in warm water. It takes years for coral polyps to form, and once they are harvested, they are not easily replaced. Over harvesting, combined with the devastating results of pollution, has led to the scarcity of coral.

The necklace dates from the 20th century.  It is strung on black cotton string.
