In this etching, "Luncheon in the Canyon," Diego Romero has made a classical reference to Edouard Manet's "Luncheon on the Grass." Romero has used two well-muscled men with faces from Mimbres pottery designs and a nude version of the Pueblo Corn Maiden as participants in the picnic. Romero has named the two males the Chongo Brothers and they are, in fact, based on Diego and his brother Mateo.
The etching is framed in the traditional manner, floated on matboard using hinges. None of the paper is covered with matboard.
Diego Romero's heritage is cross-cultural. His father, Santiago Romero, was a traditional painter from Cochiti Pueblo. Diego, like his mother, was born and raised in Berkeley, California. After art school in California he attended the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) in Santa Fe. Shortly after graduating from IAIA he enrolled at Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles. He moved on to UCLA where he received his MFA in 1993. He now lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
