This drawing is entitled Hopi Symbolism.  Only nine inches tall, it is filled, edge to edge, with at least ten Hopi images. Each symbol, significant to the Hopi culture, is meticulously rendered in colored ink and perfectly integrated with the other images. A plumed water serpent spreads its blessings over a mature, green corn plant. A Hopi maiden is covered with red, blue and yellow colored clouds as she moves towards a series of step designs with rain falling. A masked face is placed beneath a geometric series of abstract wings. Above it all is a red spiral above a katsina mask. On close observation, one can see these images are created with a series of small, multi-colored ink dots. It is quite an amazing view.

There is not much published information about the artist. He is listed as having a painting in the collection of the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). This piece was purchased by its original owner in 1992.  Regardless of not being a “known” artist, this is a highly collectible piece for anyone interested in Hopi culture.
