Cobbett has spent most of her adult life in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and received a degree from the University of New Mexico in 1951. She became a full-time painter in 1968 and taught art classes at the Albuquerque Institute of Art in 1975. She has specialized in painting Indian dancers and dances. She says that “The color and pageantry of the dances at the Rio Grande Pueblos fascinate and delight me. I have studied them for years. I try to share the beauty and excitement with those who view my work.” Cobbett’s paintings are rendered in an impressionist style with a play of light on the faces and figures. She has captured the dancers in motion in a realistic manner. The Buffalo Dancer’s body is presented in realistic musculature and his face shows the seriousness of the dance. Behind him is a female dancer dressed in white dancing alongside a Deer Dancer. The drummer is off to the edge. Even with the three other participants, the Buffalo Dancer is the focus of the painting and is featured in all his magnificence. The dark blue sky indicates an event in the fall season.
