This distinctive globular jar by Rick Dillingham exemplifies his refined sense of form and deep respect for natural materials. The piece is signed and dated ‘74 but left unpainted, showcasing the raw beauty of the clay itself. No slip or glaze was applied; instead, the surface bears organic "fire clouds": natural variations in tone caused by Dillingham's use of outdoor firing techniques.
The jar's only structural embellishment is three rows of perforations encircling the lower portion of the neck, adding a subtle yet striking element. With a rounded bottom, the vessel rests securely in a custom plastic ring provided with the piece. It remains in excellent, original condition.
Rick Dillingham (1952-1994) is celebrated for his innovative ceramic works, often inspired by prehistoric and contemporary Pueblo pottery. While many of his pieces were intentionally broken and reassembled to mimic archaeological fragments, this vessel is an example of his whole, unaltered creations. Dillingham received numerous accolades, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and contributed significantly to the field as both an artist and scholar. His work resides in major institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Mint Museum of Craft and Design, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
