Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Maria and Julian had four sons, Adam being the oldest. Adam’s wife was Santana and it was she who worked with Maria following the death of Julian in 1943.  There are two periods of pottery that were collaborated by Maria and Santana.  The earlier ones were signed Marie & Santana and that period lasted from Julian’s death in 1943 until 1956, at which time Popovi Da replaced Santana and helped his mom.  Maria did not immediately stop working with Santana when she began working with Popovi but did continue on and off for a few more years.  Those pieces are signed Maria & Santana.

Maria and Santana Martinez signaturesThis jar is signed Maria and Santana and dates to the later period when the two potters collaborated.  Popovi Da died in 1970 and Maria retired at that time and lived another ten years.  Santana’s second period of collaboration would have been from 1956 to 1970, but their production was less during that time because Popovi was working with his mom as well.

This small San Ildefonso Pueblo jar has the design of the plume of the Avanyu on the upper shoulder.  The area below the mid-point bulge is stone polished and void of any decoration.

Condition: excellent original condition with evidence that a very small pebble popped out of the lower section either during or after the firing process.  The price reflects this condition.

Provenance: from the collection of a gentleman from Colorado who purchased pueblo pottery while living in Albuquerque in the 1970s and 1980s.
