The maker stamped the initials G.J. on the pendant but none of our reference books identifies to whom those initials belong. That is the situation with this magnificent American Bison pendant. The maker stamped the initials G.J. on the pendant but none of our reference books identifies to whom those initials belong. The pendant appears to be in the style of Diné silversmiths, so that is the origin we have chosen.

The sterling silver bison appears to have been constructed of two identical shaped silver pieces, and then connected through a silver strip on top and bottom, resulting in a hollow inside. One side of the bison is scored with parallel fine lines over which is a beautiful blue turquoise gemstone mounting. The opposite side of the bison is highly polished silver with zigzag lines etched into the silver.

The bison is suspended from a handmade silver chain connected to the pendant with a silver clasp that is removable from the chain to be rotated with the bison when desired.

Condition: very good condition

Provenance: this Silver American Bison Reversible Turquoise Pendant with Silver Chain is from a client of the gallery who purchased it around 1980
