Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Signature of the artist: Stone Polished Plain Black Small Jar signed Marie Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887-1980) Pond LilyEarly pottery made by Maria was generally decorated by her husband Julian and it would either be signed Marie or Marie & Julian, however, there are always exceptions to every absolute.  Another absolute is that all plain black vessels void of decoration were signed Maria Poveka.  This small black jar deviates from the norm in that is it signed Marie S.I.P., an indication that it was made in the early 1920s when Maria was signing her name as Marie.

A possible explanation is that Maria finished making the jar and then turned it over to her sister Clara to burnish it.  Perhaps Julian was busy doing something else, so Clara signed the jar for Maria and set it aside.  Julian fired it with other pots without ever decorating it.  So, we have what should be a Maria Poveka that is signed Marie and it is probably a relatively rare one.

Condition: very good condition with a small amount of scratches

Provenance: from a family collection from Arlington, Virginia
