Tlingit Lidded Basket Woven over a Glass Bottle [SOLD]

This exquisite small, lidded basketry jar made by an unknown Tlingit Weaver still retains its beautiful pigment colors. The weaving, which is truly exceptional, was executed over a small glass bottle. The weaving material was twined during the weaving process.

The Tlingit people live in Southeastern Alaska, extending along the coast from British Columbia to Yakutat Bay in the north. Their baskets are often made of finely twined split spruce root decorated with false embroidery designs. These are usually geometric designs applied in horizontal bands over the horizontal bands woven with dyed wefts. Source: Burke Museum website

Provenance: this Tlingit Lidded Basket Woven over a Glass Bottle is from a client in New Mexico who inherited it from her father.
