Eddie Beyuka (1920-2002) is best known for his bola - bolo ties and standing figures of Katsinas and dancers executed in channel inlay with a variety of materials—generally turquoise, mother of pearl, jet, coral, and others—skillfully integrated in his famous creations.
Beyuka was featured in the "Jewels of the Southwest" exhibit at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, Santa Fe, in 2002. His work is in the collection of the Peabody Museum, Harvard University, and in the collections of a number of private individuals.
This one features a Hoop Dancer with several silver hoops through which he will pass his legs and body through a very active dance. The use of so many stones is testament to Beyuka’s care in presenting the best image he could achieve. Every area of the dancer is covered in a variety of stones, all carefully cut to fit the curves laid out with silver strips. Beyuka was one of the best artisans of his time and he left some amazing works of art for collectors to enjoy. The piece is stamped with the initials EAB and ZUNI.
