These pottery moccasins were created by an unknown Zuni Pueblo potter. Labels reading White Eagle Indian Store, Albuquerque appear on the bottom of each moccasin. According to a knowledgeable Albuquerque-based dealer, the White Eagle Indian Store was located on West Central Avenue in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the 1920s. Later, it was purchased by Saul Bell and renamed Rio Grande.

These moccasins appear to date to that time period. They are softly patinated, with visible evidence of years of handling. Designs in brown appear over the white clay, with solid brown soles down below.

Items like this were made for sale to visitors and local collectors, occasionally at the suggestion of traders and shop owners. It is a pleasure to come across an item that is marked with the name and logo of an early Albuquerque, New Mexico dealer.

Condition: very good condition, some light abrasion, and a superficial slip crack

Provenance: this Zuni Pueblo Historic Pottery Moccasins Pair is from a private Colorado collection
