This Zuni silver salad service set by Robert and Bernice Leekya includes a large fork and spoon, each featuring a beautifully crafted silver handle adorned with five irregular turquoise cabochons. The turquoise is set in delicate bezels, adding texture and color to the otherwise smooth silverwork. The pieces are stamped RBL, identifying the renowned husband-and-wife silversmith team from Zuni Pueblo.
The set has an appealing weight and balance, making it both functional and collectible. Robert and Bernice Leekya began making jewelry together in 1953. Robert, the son of legendary fetish carver Leekya Deyuse, learned silversmithing from his father and continued the family tradition alongside Bernice. Together, they are celebrated for their bold turquoise nugget work and detailed channel inlay, and this set reflects the distinctive style for which they are best known.
The silver appears to have been hand hammered, likely in the manner taught to Robert by his dad, Leekya Deyuse.
