The Cosmic Dance: Zuni Pueblo Earrings and the Rhythm of the Universe

This pair of earrings was made by an unidentified silversmith and lapidary artist from Zuni Pueblo. They are very petite, measuring only an inch in length. A round section conceals the silver post and contains a traditional Zuni sun face image that was assembled from turquoise, coral, jet, and mother of pearl. Suspended from this post is a triangular pendant in pyramidal shape hosting a triangular mother of pearl gemstone and three small triangular coral alternating with three triangular jet gemstones.

The combination of a circle and a triangle add immensely to the dynamics of each earring. The elements of fire, water, air, and earth are depicted with variations of upright and upside-down triangles. The circle implies an idea of movement, and symbolizes the cycle of time, the perpetual motion of everything that moves, the planets' journey around the sun, and the great rhythm of the universe.
