+ Add Artist to My Preferences

Gerti Sanchez, Mapoo, Isleta Pueblo, active ca. 1970s-present: pottery figurines, and Nacimientos. Gerti is a self-taught artist. She was guided by her grandmother and aunt, who made pottery to sell at railroad tourist stops in the 1920s and 30s. Gerti Sanchez signs her work with her Isleta Pueblo name, Mapoo ("Corn Silk"). There are very few potters at Isleta Pueblo. It is no longer a large pottery-producing pueblo as it was in the early 20th century.
