Picture of Hubert CandelarioHubert Candelario San Felipe Pueblo confided, "I found myself through pottery." The collectors also have found him, as his popularity is soaring. He makes some of the most attractive micaceous pots in the Southwest. Hubert credits Maria Martinez and Nancy Youngblood as his original inspirations. Maria encouraged him personally. He was influenced directly by Nancy's swirl pots which have become so popular.

Three years after graduation from Bernalillo High School, Hubert began in 1987 making polished redware. By 1990, he switched to using an orange micaceous slip. He set out to create a new style and succeeded: "I like to see what I can do differently with the designs. I like to get a new look." His most distinctive styles are the melon swirl pts and his orangeware with incised black outlines.
Hubert pushes the art form forward with his puzzle pots which are painted with outlines that fit together like pieces of a puzzle. He also creates what he calls "holey" pots with sharp rounded ridges and cut-outs.

Hubert is emerging as one of the top Pueblo Indian potters of the 21st century. People respond positively tohis pottery. "So many say they love my pieces. It makes me feel so good that people like my work."
