James Russell Humetewa Jr. (Shelling Corn), a highly prolific and influential Hopi Pueblo painter (1926-1976), was born near Tuba City, Arizona, and later established his artistic presence in Santa Fe and Bernalillo.
During the 1950s, Humetewa emerged as one of the most significant young Hopi painters, creating a substantial body of work that garnered widespread recognition. He not only exhibited extensively but also worked directly with the Museum of New Mexico, placing his compelling pieces in numerous other prominent collections. His artistic legacy is well-documented, with his work featured in most of the major texts dedicated to early Native American painting.
