+ Add Artist to My Preferences
Seferina Ortiz (1931-2007) stands as one of the most revered and influential potters of Cochiti Pueblo, her artistic lineage tracing back to her mother, the esteemed Laurencita Herrera. Her exceptional artistry has earned her representation in numerous prestigious museum and private collections, including a remarkable holding of 32 pieces at the Peabody Museum of Harvard University.
Cochiti Pueblo boasts a rich history of figurative pottery, reaching its zenith in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A significant revival in the early 1970s saw the emergence of the now-iconic storyteller figurines. However, Seferina Ortiz was among the visionary Cochiti potters who expanded beyond these traditional forms, carving her own distinctive path within this enduring artistic heritage.
