Apprehension about the industrialization of society at the beginning of the 20th century prompted the Arts and Crafts Movement. Designers, furniture makers and craftspeople wanted to emphasize simplicity of form in addition to a connection with nature as they feared society was becoming too mechanized. Craftspeople creating textiles, jewelry, pottery and furniture worked using only high-quality materials and exceptional construction to reflect their appreciation of the natural environment and man’s place in the world.

Claycraft Potteries began in Los Angeles in the 1920s as part of this movement. Fred and George Robertson were a father and son team whose family had been making ceramics for generations. They were largely responsible for most of the work done at Claycraft Potteries. They focused on the creation of pieces featuring images that highlighted and celebrated the natural beauty and allure of California in the early 20th century.
