Active as a ceramic artist since the 1980s, Mary Lewis is well known for her traditional Cochiti Pueblo hand-coiled figurines and storytellers. She married into a distinguished lineage of Pueblo potters, becoming the wife of Elmer Lewis and the daughter-in-law of renowned artists Ivan and Rita Lewis.
Working within this family tradition, Mary embraces classic Cochiti methods and materials. Her figures are constructed from native Cochiti clay and finished with the pueblo's characteristic gray-buff slip, dark black pigment extracted from wild spinach (beeplant), and natural red oxide accents. Her storyteller figures closely mirror the influence and expressive style of her mother-in-law, Rita Lewis, while maintaining her own artistic voice. She traditionally signs her pieces as "M. Lewis Cochiti."
