American Indian and Alaska Native Traders Directory: A State by State Directory of American Indian and Alaska Native wholesale and Retail Traders in North America.

1989. Arrowstar Publishing.

From the Book:

This directory is the most extensive publication of its kind in America. The data contained herein is a compilation of addresses collected over a 2 year period and reflects the editing of 1000’s of contacts.

The individuals and businesses listed in this directory are, were, or have been purported to be wholesalers, retailers, artists, craftspeople, traders, or even manufacturers of American Indians and Alaska Native arts and crafts. Their listing in this directory in no way is to reflect that they themselves are American Indians or Alaska Natives nor that their products are authentic. It is merely to reflect that they, either by self-attestation or by referral from others, wished to be listed in a directory of this nature.

The American Indian art and crafts industry itself has been the subject of numerous investigations and “rip offs” over the years. The United States government has made several attempts in the last decade to legislate protection for not only the true American Indian and Alaska Native artist or craftsperson but also the unwary consumer. To date these efforts have had questionable effect. Other independent efforts, such as guides and associations, self policing themselves, have had some impact but today there still exists a thriving market in arts and crafts no necessarily produced by true American Indians and Alaska natives.

The American Indian and Alaska Native arts and crafts market itself is not clearly defined. There exist excellent distribution channels for nearly all forms of these unique and sought after commodities, many of which are listed in this directory. It was the purpose of this directory to make known to the general public on as wide a scale as possible the numerous business and individuals that deal in American Indian and Alaska Native arts and crafts. Towards that end we believe our goals have been accomplished.
