From the Back Cover:

Few stories of human migrations have been as fascinating or have raised as many questions as do those of the ancient peoples of the American Southwest. Photographer Lewis Kemper and author Gregory Schaaf lead us on a unique search for these remarkable ancestors.

Using stories of clan migrations as a map, ancient trails help retrace the footsteps of these ancient peoples and their animals. We follow these trails from ruin to ruin in order to uncover the reasons for the migrations, where they lead, and what eventually happened to these communities. Clues are found through the study of ancient legends, along with artifacts such as pottery, textiles, and baskets. The combination of personal perspective along with superbly executed color photography has rarely been attempted and presents an enthralling addition to the library of work on the indigenous people of the Southwest.

Lewis Kemper has photographed the natural beauty of North America and its parklands for over fifteen years. His images have been shown nationally in galleries and museums such as the Frederick S. Wight Gallery the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Ansel Adams Gallery. His work has also been published in numerous magazines, including National Geographic Traveler, National Wildlife, and Sierra. He is currently a contributing editor to Outdoor Photographer.

Dr. Gregory Schaaf is the director of the Center for Indigenous Arts and Cultures and is historian for the Hopi Kikmongwi and the Assembly of Hopimongwid. He is a recognized scholar and has addressed the United Nations and testified before the United States Senate. He has authored or co-authored twenty articles and five books. He is a tribally enrolled member and serves as counselor to the Chief of the Northern Cherokee nation.
