From the Back Cover

Once the weaver's task is complete and the finished product is taken from the loom--what happens to it? Beyond the loom, fabrics become many things: garments, blankets, floor coverings, trade items, and art objects. This book shows what the southwestern blankets of the nineteenth century can reveal of the cultures that produced them. It highlights the research of anthropologist Joe Ben Wheat, whose own brand of detective work involves searching archives, testing dyes, and describing design styles. Over 100 important Pueblo, Navajo, and Hispanic textiles from the University of Colorado Museum permanent collection are described.
