This exhibition, Masterworks of the Taos Founders, was a rare opportunity in which fine American art and the romantic history of the West were combined into one dynamic showing.  The artists who founded the Taos Society in the early 1900s were perhaps not completely aware of what their simple act of unification would accomplish for art in America.  These first members not only proclaimed a deep friendship for one another, but also stated a simple ethic that was to establish forevermore a tradition in American art. Their goal was to inspire an ever increasing standard of quality for art and to aid the understanding of art in general.

The founders of the Taos Society were successful not only as artists, but also as men of inspiration.  The exhibition that this catalogue represents is but a part of their legacy to American art; the rest is found today in the studios and workshops of Taos, New Mexico where their inspiration lives on.
