From the back cover of the paperback edition:

The year A.D. 1000 marked the beginning of the one-hundred-fifty-year classic period in Mimbres Culture of the prehistoric Southwest and saw the flourishing of the astonishing painted pottery by which the Mimbres people are known today. Mimbres Classic Mysteries presents the finest examples of Mimbres prehistoric figurative art uniquely depicting, in apparently literal terms, Mimbres life, culture, and environment. These hemispheric designs are prehistory's most telling visual record of the ancient American Southwest. While most books contain photographs of Mimbres pots that have been reconstructed from shards, Mimbres Classic Mysteries distills the pictorialism of these designs through digital renderings that bring to life the clarity of the originals. The result is an appealing and accessible com¬pilation in an easy-to-browse format.

Tom Steinbach's long career in industrial design and Ergonomics began in the 1940s for Montgomery Ward and for Raymond Loewy Associates, Chicago, during which time his design work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art. He planned and taught industrial design at Illinois Institute of Technology, Institute of Design, Chicago. Steinbach, along with his sons who co-illustrate this volume, began studying Mimbres pottery in 1986. He lives in Albuquerque. New Mexico.

From the publisher's website:

Industrial designer Tom Steinbach recreates the remarkable and colorful poetry designs of Mimbres classic culture (ad1000-1150) in seventy-five digitally produced renderings that uniquely depict evidence of Mimbres life, culture and environment. In addition to the remarkable motif interpretations, the author uses the designs to sketch out additional information about this culture, including hypothesizing about the Mimbres view of nature, and the artists themselves.
