From the Preface

“The furniture catalogs on the Indian Splint Manufacturing Company reproduced in the following pages are not just two more ‘Stickley’ catalogs.  On the contrary, the Arts and Crafts style furniture depicted in these catalogs is nothing like the work of Gustav Stickley or the other makers of orthodox mission style furniture.  As claimed in the catalogs, Indian Splint furniture provided an attractive alternative to the traditional ‘springs and leather’ mission style furniture and its ‘countless imitations.’

“While the Arts and Crafts community of collectors, scholars, and dealers may differ among themselves as to the relative quality and aesthetic merit of Indian Splint furniture, there can be no questions concerning the importance of knowing and preserving that part of our cultural heritage that is represented by these catalogs.  Indian Splint furniture is a part of our history—a small part, but still a fascinating part.  Though produced for only a short time and in comparatively modest quantities, Indian Splint mission style furniture had, and continues to have, considerable appeal.  To know the history of the Indian Splint Manufacturing Company and to be familiar with its furniture provides insights into how middle class Americans furnished their homes, and lived, in the first two decades of this century.  In short, these Indian Splint furniture catalogs furnish another, very distinct, view into the true Arts and Crafts home.”
