Bill Belknap was born in New York State with an incurable interest in everything Indian.  He moved west at an early age and spent every possible moment at the Grand Canyon where, as a teenager, he became friends with Fred Kabotie.

As a writer and photographer, he trained at Life magazine and later became a frequent contributor to National Geographic.  With his wife, Fran, he coauthored Gunnar Widforss, Painter of the Grand Canyon for the Museum of Northern Arizona.  In addition to his writing, Bill is an avid and expert river runner, and with his son, Buzz, publishes river-running literature.
